What is a Dental Implant?
Implants are the choice method of tooth replacement. When compared to more traditional treatments, a dental implant has far more advantages, such as:
- An artificial root that functions and resembles a real tooth
- The ability to last for the entire life of the patient
- Extreme durability that is even greater than natural teeth
- An option to replace single missing teeth without altering the structure of the teeth around them
- Improving the bone quality in the jaw
Essentially, the implant is a stand-alone artificial tooth root that can support a single dental crown, or be used with other implants to support a denture.
Your New Dental Implants
For most of our dental implant patients, we will start with a 3D scan to assist in treatment planning and delivery for the procedure. This data shows us exactly where your new implants should be placed, drastically reducing the length of surgery and recovery time.
On the day of your surgery, we’ll offer an option such as oral sedation (with nitrous oxide) to help you relax. Most people do swimmingly, even tending to forget what happened.
After installing your implant, we will wait approximately four months before installing a permanent crown. This allows new bone to grow around the artificial tooth and bond directly to it, a process we call osseointegration.
Implant Supported Overdentures
Removable overdentures are a type of denture that snaps over dental implant locators. This keeps them in place throughout the day, so that you don’t have to worry about them slipping or sliding during a meal or conversation.
Because of the structural integrity implants offer, we can use as few as two of them to support your overdenture. In certain cases, we can even retrofit your current denture to fit over implant locators.
What to Expect After Implant Surgery
While you’re healing, we can make a comfortable flipper for you to wear. This protects the surgical site and prevents any embarrassment caused by missing teeth. Once everything has healed up nicely and the bone is fully integrated with your implant, we will fix the permanent crown into place.
Thanks to our in-house CEREC technology, we are able to make your crown right here in our office and deliver it in the very same day!
Most people find that dental implant surgery is not too uncomfortable! In many cases, it’s relatively easier than having a tooth pulled.
